Peer Leadership
Children have the opportunity to take on a number of different responsibilities of peer leadership.
School Councils
The Infant and Junior schools have their own school councils. Representatives are chosen from each class so that children are able to represent the views of their peers in school-wide decisions.
Librarians
Children in each class take responsibility for checking out and returning books. They are trained by the staff school librarian to take on responsibilities for the smooth running of the libraries.
Young Interpreters
The Young Interpreters in school help newly arrived pupils to feel welcome and settled in their new school environment and to feel part of the school. Young Interpreters can be bi-lingual or English-only speakers. They develop confidence, communication skills and learn different strategies to clarify, explain and ‘interpret’ a whole range of school activities, systems and procedures to new entrants through the medium of pupil–friendly English where first language isn’t shared by other pupils or adults. Young Interpreters are not used as interpreters for a specific language, more as support to new pupils.
Eco Councils
Each school has their own eco council, with representatives chosen from each class. Children work with staff to improve the environment around the schools including recycling and energy efficiency.
Junior Road Safety Officers
Children in years 5 and 6 receive training from Hampshire County Council to run awareness activities in the infant and junior schools to stay safe when out and about on pavements and streets.
Head Pupils and Prefects
In the junior school, a combination of election and staff selection choose children as Head Pupils, Deputy Head Pupils, and Prefects. These children take on a wide range of responsibilities including running parts of the weekly WOW assemblies, escorting visitors around the school, and leading whole-school initiatives.
Playground Buddies
Each junior school class has two children who take on additional responsibility to support their peers during breaktimes and lunchtimes.
Happiness Heroes
Each class has chosen two children as Happiness Heroes as part of our participation in the myHappyMind programme.
